The Berlin Burlesque Festival – what a night – review

by | Art

Well, all I can say is, what a night!

I honestly cannot remember the last time I felt so glamourous in Berlin. I donned my red sequin gown and headed the Neukölln. Burlesque lovers and performers were kitted out in their finest as we gathered in the ballroom’s foyer.

We sipped Asbach cocktails, my favourite being the Lady Buck and there were exquisite nipple tassels and corsets to purchase from Feisty Cat. Before long it was time to head into the ballroom and take our seats in preparation for the show. The ballroom was wonderfully lit with chandeliers, the stage was set and the Emerald Esmeraldas were working the floor getting everyone in the mood.

Our host for the evening was Eve Champagne

And though she talked only in German, I enjoyed a lot of her jokes, the filthier the better. First up was a firecracker of an act, Lady Francesca. A completely cheeky minx who wowed audience in scarlet. Something softer followed with sweeping turquoise fabrics brought by Veronica Divine. One of the acts that really blew my mind was Miss Ellie Mouse, who took to the skies and stripped upside, spinning, from a hoop suspended above the stage.

She even removed her stocking with her teeth. Incredible.

Agata D’mon set pulses raising with her fiery fan dance and we welcomed the interval with a final swinging performance from Delta Deggers as she Charleston-ed along with the live band, the Sazerac Swingers.

A well needed prosecco break and the band played on

After we returned to our seats it was time to heat things up a bit. A wonderful cheeky Mexican fire eating act was delivered by Talulah Blue. And we saw real beauty with Miss Cairo. Lunart-X stopped the crowd as she used fire torches to melt the latex right off of her body, truly insane. Xarah Von Den Add to dictionary brought back the drama and promptly covered the stage in glitter in a wonderfully old school routine.

Then last, but by no means least we had Lily Verlaine

She charmed the audience with her flower routine, each flower she threw out into the audience revealed more and more. To take their bows, all girls returned to the stage and glitter cannons were used in abundance as the swing band kept toes tapping. The show may have finished but the lights stayed low and the audience began to dance late into the night accompanied by the live music from the brilliant house band.

I had a wonderfully magical evening.

It’s really made me consider entering the world of burlesque

If only for the fabulous costumes. I would like to thank the hosts, Marlene Von Steenvag and Else Edelstahl for having me and I look forward to watching the next show they produce.
