Interview with the multi-talented Michael Malarkey from The Vampire Diaries

by | indieBerlin

We had a chance toย sit down with aย singer-songwriter, actor andย all-roundย great guy Michael Malarkey,ย on his tour in Germanyย andย chatย aboutย hisย calling forย tellingย stories.

Having actedย Enzoย in the American supernatural teen drama Vampire Diaries, Malarkey is a familiarย face to many. Not only isย heย a charismatic character onย theย screen butย heย is also in hisย elementย as a musician onย the stage. As a matter of fact,ย Malarkeyย callsย toย mind thatย singing became hisย primary creative outletย before hisย acting career took off.ย ย In an interview before his gig at Biย Nuuย in Kreuzberg,ย Malarkeyย opens upย toย indieBerlinย aboutย the traumas of hisย veryย early acting career and reveals which banger you would most likely find him singing to inย a karaoke bar!

indieBerlin: Thank you for joining us today, how are you Michael?ย ย

Thank you. Itโ€™s always a pleasure to be backย here. Every time we come back to Berlin itโ€™s a great show and nice turn out.

indieBerlin:ย Firstly, youโ€™re also an incredibly well-known actor, are there any parallels between the worlds ofย music andย acting?ย

Well, they are both storytelling and they are both ways of communicating. I feel like my work in music helps me in certain ways withย acting as well: I think about things in terms of audio andย rhythm. But they are twoย veryย different things at the same timeย – they are both exploring different elementsย ofย myself.ย ย

indieBerlin:ย Is it easier to tell a story as an actor or as a musician?ย

As an actorย youย obviously have someone else with their script to help tell the story, you just have toย say the words โ€“ some people make it a lot more complicated than that. As far as music goes theย storytelling is less direct, itโ€™s more of a poetic form.ย The joy I have in making music is the fact that itโ€™s not saying exactly what the story is. It’s about hinting at it, itโ€™s about creatingย little pictures, paintingsย andย imagery,ย I suppose, that are strung together toย in order toย createย emotionsย and feelings in the listener.ย Itโ€™s a lot more open to interpretation.ย

The joy I have in making music is the fact that itโ€™s not saying exactly what the story is.

indieBerlin:ย How has the reception been on your music, especially here in Germany?ย

Great,ย I mean the crowd here isย fantastic. Like I said, I love coming back to Germany. We just have a good timeย hereย and the responseย to the recordย has been fantasticย so far!ย

indieBerlin: if you could collaborate with anyone in music, who would it be?ย

I donโ€™t normally think like that. I donโ€™t think about people Iย could collaborate withย –ย I just carry on doing my own thing.ย

indieBerlin:ย What is your go-to song in karaoke?ย

Karaoke?! I donโ€™t do karaoke!ย (laughs). I think it hasย something to do with when you do thisย forย workย you think about it differently… If I had to do choose a karaoke song, I would probably do Loser by Beck.ย

If I had to do choose a karaoke song, I would probably do Loser by Beck.

indieBerlin:ย Have you ever embarrassed yourself on the stage?ย

Oh yeah, for sure!ย I didย someย playsย as an extra-curricular activityย when I wasย a kid, before I even wanted to be an actor.ย There was this one time we did a Greek mythย a spoof kind of a thing. Theย chorus inย a Greek myth tells the story.ย Our version of the chorus was a chorus of frogs.ย We were wearing these little frog masks and doing all the motions โ€“ and then I realise I haveย forgottenย to put the mask on!ย Thereย wereย like twenty other people in this chorus and Iย was the only one who didnโ€™t have a mask. I was absolutely mortified!ย ย

indieBerlin:ย What is the most touching response youโ€™ve had to a piece of your music?ย

I am always touched when people respond and care to share it with me. It is always touching when someone takes the chanceย on doing that โ€“ it’s a difficult thing to do. I would find it difficult to do that. There are a lot of people that are responding to a song – a lot of songsย to be honestย – butย Scarsย gets a lotย [response] from people who are going through a difficult phase. They say that it has helped them to be strong and to overcome something. And thatโ€™s awesome.ย

indieBerlin:ย Haveย thereย been anyย particular highlightsย on the tour?ย

Uh! Itโ€™s all just one bigย blurย โ€“ and I donโ€™t mean that in a bad way!ย The tour kind of feels like oneย entity,ย you just move alongย andย itโ€™s a one long day.ย Itโ€™s a one giant highlight!ย I meanย I am sure thatย when I go back homeย afterwards,ย Iโ€™ll be able to remember more specifically. But I very muchย live by the day โ€“ my highlight today is getting hereย and doing a good show, thatโ€™sย allย I thinkย about.ย

Having recently released his new album โ€˜Graveracerโ€™,ย Michael Malarkey is currently touringย inย Europeย andย starring inย season twoย ofย historicalย drama television seriesย Projectย Blue Book.ย
