Lotta St. Joan: Reaching out from the pregnant void

by | Music, New Music

With her ethereal new single, ‘Between You and I’ Lotta St. Joan captures a glimpse of the mysterious space between the other and the Self, between choices, relationships, perhaps between generations? She asks “It’s all at my Disposal, But what if I Decide it all wrong?”

‘Between You and I’ expressly illuminates the philosophical depths of her upcoming new album (March 2024) ‘Song for the Undecided’

Despite seemingly coming from a place of apprehension, while delicately reaching out to us from this pregnant void, Lotta St. Joan does not seem to be lost in the dark. Especially so when it comes to the cinematic stratosphere ‘Between You and I’ effortlessly provides to the pleasure of the listeners imagination. The song opens up a space for us to project an impassioned soundtrack onto our own personal head movie. It will be surprising if this song doesn’t become the theme to something violently romantic and medieval on the screen one day.

It is obvious the choices made at The Famous Gold Watch Studio in Berlin when hand-crafting this eloquent and sensuous recording were absolutely, without a doubt, solid. The production quality is stellar and the mix is unique and creative. This recording is impossible to vacate from that place between your ears, on the tip of your tongue, it is a hungry ear worm tunneling it’s way down towards the source of your pulse.

Lotta St. Joan really doesn’t sound as if she fears the uncertain, or even the unknown, but rather seems sorta at ease and maybe even brave enough to embrace all that fleeting potential. As if smiling peacefully while pointing towards a beauty that seems painfully unavoidable. With each round of the chorus she magically conjures that specter, the one that haunts a fragile zone ‘Between You and I’  With this music the ghosts of the future become more faithful than tragic.

The string section is stunning, dramatic and tenacious in how it compliments the graceful dynamic warble of  Lotta St. Joan’s vocals.

Watching the videos of the recording sessions at the Gold Watch, one can sense a heartwarming and wholesome atmosphere radiating from all involved. The string section is stunning, dramatic and tenacious in how it compliments the graceful dynamic warble of  Lotta St. Joan’s vocals. And the timing of when the drums and band come in is perfect in it’s sway. It’s compelling to taste this sample from the forthcoming album, ‘Song for the Undecided’ as it will tell the moving story of a young woman torn between the fear of closeness and the longing for it.

After finding this song suddenly in the middle of my life I have come to accept that Lotta St. Joan  can’t actually make any wrong decisions even if she has it all at her disposal. Because without exposing oneself to the risk of  being vulnerable, I doubt that there would be music quite like this.
