Review: Fashion Re-Evolution Volume One in Arena last Sunday

There’s one word that most definitely describes the inhabitants of Berlin, tenacious. It doesn’t matter what the city throws at us, we rise above it and carry on, stronger than before. No more was this clear than at the Fashion Re-Evolution Volume One at Arena Club.
Berlin’s Alternative Fashion Week was scheduled to be going ahead, until due to unforeseen circumstances the organisers and whatsmore the budgets pulled out. Leaving the designers in a bit of a pickle. Did they throw the towel in? No, they poured themselves a rather large gin and got together, putting together one of the most orchestrated and well thought out fashion showcases in only 7 days. The designers featured were:

Alabama Blonde (Melbourne)
Jade Helene (Berlin)
Marco Scaiano (Berlin)
Wreckreation (North of England)
MARRKNULL (Beijing)
Yu Lin (Taipei)
Each designer was able to present their personal voice without overlap

Assembling the fashion crowd of the city, Studio Mimik, Eladio Luis Miguel Torres and Marco Scaiano decided to step in to give them the event they deserve. The event was a highly successful collaboration between designers, photographers, DJs, models and make up artists. The vast variety of styling meant each designer was able to present their personal voice without overlap.
A personal favourite had to be that of Jade Helene Designs and her Shadow Rose collection beginning with a contemporary dance with light clad dancers setting the scene. Following on from Jade’s renowned “Berghain Elegance” vibe, there were luxury lace sheer pieces, edgy cut out trousers paired with sequin pasties a la Lil Kim. The piece that caught my eye was this beautiful white gown complete with leather fetish belt.

Alabama Blonde’s collection was highly anticipated following the all the press surrounding her including the IndieBerlin exclusive interview. Well, she did not disappoint, sending models down the run way in the sexiest, but wearable latex pieces I’ve ever seen. Highly reminiscent of early Westwood during her SEX years, the show had a real celebration of sexuality. The showstopper had to be the net and jewel dress. It was showbiz glamour married with sensual eroticism and definitely going onto my wish list.

MARKNULL’s trash to fashion was ecofriendly, outlandish and couture. It reminded my of Rick Owen’s recent presentation and I especially love the hot water bottle bag. Wearable? Hmmm, maybe in Berlin? Art? Most definitely.

We had an injection of neon colour from WRECKREATION with 80s style work out gear so bright it would have made Mr Motivator sing. The models even sported combed out mullets. Whether we like it or not, the 80s will always be relevant.
Added to the looks were face harnesses, because why not? Leather is hot.
Marco Scaiano’s male collection sent some of the most beautiful male models I’ve ever seen down the runway in deep tones of black and grey, the Berlin uniform. Deconstructed items of clothing with cutouts and undone tailoring meant the line looked modern rather than clean. Added to the looks were face harnesses, because why not? Leather is hot.

We were served asymmetric and origami folded elegance from Yu Lin’s hats and dresses fir for the future lady who lunches. There were definite elements of Comme De Garcons here with the polo goggles and boxy red lipstick. I was living for the monochromatic dress and hat, very Eliza Doolittle at Ascot circa 3017. Certain looks wouldn’t have looked out of place on an Alexander McQueen runway either.

Overall, a wonderful evening was had, the crowd alone showed up with their most individual looks, but what is a fashion show without a few posers? I’m in awe of the work everyone put in and how quickly they pulled it off. Keep your eyes pealed on these designers, they’re going to be achieving big things very soon.
