We are in love with this love song dedicated to SUV’s by Dino Paris und der Chor der Finsternis

by | indieBerlin

We had the pleasure of interviewing Dino Paris about his solo project Dino Paris und der Chor der Finsternis.

We asked him a few questions about his project, him as an artist and his new single SUV, that comes with a killer animated music video made by Martin Dziallas.

Dino Paris goes by the name Jan Preißler in his day-to-day life. To find out why his solo-project is called Dino Paris und der Chor der Finsternis, read our interview with him. While you are at it, you might as well listen to his new single while enjoying our chat with him.

Indieberlin: Tell us a little bit about your musical background

Dino Paris: I started playing classic guitar when I was about 6. I even made it into the music school’s guitar-orchestra, but then I discovered the bass guitar and started my first band at the age of 11. There is a video my parents made of my first performance, showing that the bass guitar was bigger than me.
From that time I started playing many different instruments, and played in many different projects from Black/Death Metal to Punk/HC and HipHop to Pop.
I released 3 Albums with the Noise-Rock-Band Vögel die Erde essen and 3 Albums with the Electronica/Ambient-Duo Wælder during the last 6 years.
Dino Paris & der Chor der Finsternis is my first solo-project. Well, actually it is also a duo, because I write all the songs and lyrics, but I am accompanied by Boris Nielsen who is adding the coolest synthesizers you can imagine.

Indieberlin: How did you come up with the name Dino Paris und der Chor der Finsternis?

Dino Paris: A friend of mine once told me, if I would be singing German Schlager my name would be Dino Paris. He was really sure about that.
„Der Chor der Finsternis“ means „the choir of darkness“ in English, and I am not sure how I came up with that. It may be because I really love Black Metal and its aesthetics. The combination of German Schlager with black metal describes my music a bit as well.

Indieberlin: If your music was a movie, which genre would it be in?

Dino Paris: Imagine Jodorowsky and Lynch making a movie for children out of a ABBA Song.

Indieberlin: Where do you get your inspiration from?

Dino Paris: I think inspiration comes from everything you do, and you can not really control it. There may be nothing more weird and inspiring than the realities we live in. I love reading political stuff but also children’s books. I am working a lot as a composer for theatre, so I read a lot of theatre plays and watch a lot of movies as well.
I really love the old Helge Schneider Movies “Praxis Doktor Hasenbein” and “Texas”. One of my favourite movies might be “The Greasy Strangler”, and I am a huge fan of “Twin Peaks” by David Lynch.

Indieberlin: What music do you listen to when you’re touring?

Dino Paris: It would be easier to mention what kind of music we don’t listen to:
And I think we never listened to Avicii in the Bus.

Indieberlin: Do you see your songs in colour or in black and white?

Dino Paris: In color, although I have some sort of color blindness.

Indieberlin: Your new single SUV has a really nice animated video: How did you come up with the idea for the video?

Dino Paris: I always wanted to work on an animated video with Martin Dziallas. He is a friend of mine, and I really love everything he does. His arts and his music is really great. You should definitely check it out!
The storyboard is made up by Martin. I just imagined the video to have some sort of arcade game atmosphere.

Indieberlin: How did you come up with the lyrics for the song? Do you really love SUV’s that much, or is it sarcastic?

Dino Paris: I think the SUV may be the best metaphor for everything that is going wrong in this world concerning climate change and global warming.
Most of the lyrics I write have a change of perspective in them. In „SUV“ the sport utility vehicle itself is singing about climate change, so it’s more like a love song. I think that change of perspective in the lyrics makes the problems  in reality more visible, than singing something like: “SUVs are so bad, i don’t like SUVs…”

Indieberlin: Thank you so much for your time. We can’t wait to hear more music from Dino und der Chor der Finsternis!
