Bon Iver performs new album in Michelberger to kick off 80 artist event

by | indieBerlin

We’ve been looking forward to this for a while now. Michelberger and a few musicians around Bon Iver and the National get together lots of their friends ie over 80 of the biggest indie artists in the world, close up Michelberger for a week and then put on a weekend of collaborations and unusual performances in the amazing Funkhaus recording complex.

Finally we’re there. Although the artists generally turned up on Monday, they officially opened the thing with a peformance by Bon Iver on Wednesday evening. With maybe a couple hundred people invited the night was just like overloaded with good time vibes. It’s been a long time since I attended a gig with such a warm, relaxed and generally downright good-hearted atmosphere.

We were obviously very touched to be able to be among the first people to hear the new Bon Iver record, and watching and listening to the band made me realise all over again why they’re as sought after as they are. Combining Americana vocals and structures with electronics and open arrangements, they came across as a band supremely at ease with themselves, and who really enjoy what they do.

We’re now even more excited than before about what the weekend will bring. And can’t help thinking that this is how music should be, if not always then much more often…not the same old same old but something done with and out of love, without expectations but with the courage to open yourself up to whatever comes out.

indieBerlin gets a little sneak peek into the behind-the-scenes rehearsal process at Funkhaus on Friday before the festival – check back here to see what we find back there!

And if you haven’t yet, then make sure to get one of the last tickets available for the weekend, trust me, you really don’t want to miss this one.
