Wild Tales Bar welcomed an eager crowd last Friday, all ready to see MAKENZIE drop his first single You and Me, and indieBerlin made sure not to miss out on the party.
Arriving in the uncomfortably jam-packed venue, pumping beats and the smell of sweat and cigarettes greeted us like a friendly slap in the face. We knew we were in for a good night.
Originally hailing from Tennessee, MAKENZIE is a newcomer to the Berlin scene. “You and Me” is his first single but the young rapper performed with such confidence to the eager crowd that there was no question who owned the night. Jokes were shooting between the artist and the crowd, who were clearly enchanted by MAKENZIE’s sincere smile and much repeated “thank yous”.

Sincerity is the best word to describe MAKENZIE as an artist. His new single “You and Me” is clearly a tragic love story and, with it, he reminds us that we need to deal with the consequences of our actions. Expounding on the single’s voice, MAKENZIE explains that “His love for his gone lover is still strong and his regrets are clear in the song. The universe is against them, they can’t be together and there is nothing that can be done.” The fatalistic and honest lyrics obviously reference a lost love that still haunts him, and MAKENZIE’s vulnerability brought out even more power in his performance.
But don’t get us wrong, MAKENZIE is far from being a bummer. The old school vibe mixed with the modern beats will make you bop your head and sing along in the car.
We love the Kendrick Lamar meet Tyler The Creator influences in his straight-to-the-point flow, without any “bitches” coming out of his mouth, which is really appreciated in today’s rap culture. MAKENZIE is a romantic with a dope flow, and we are really excited to hear more from him. We’d just advise him to pick a bigger venue next time.
