Colorize by Pretty City – a total blast in more ways than one

by | indieBerlin

Colorize, the debut full-length from Melbourne-based fuzz-rockers, Pretty City, is a total blast in more ways than one.
From the get-go here, the first chords of opening single ‘Melt’ hit you with the Aussies’ anthemic brand of grunge rock face-first, and before you know it you’re instinctively reaching to turn it up. And if there’s one thing that overwhelmingly defines the following ten songs, it’s the sheer sense of fun running through each and every track.

A freshness and adventurism to their sound
This three-piece have cut their teeth over the past couple of years: their run of impressive singles, the best of which feature on Colorize, led to their booking to play last year’s South By South West in the USA. There’s a freshness and adventurism to their sound, with the heavy distortion and dreamy reverberating vocals on tracks like ‘Running Around’ occupying the ground somewhere between grunge and surf-rock that feels both exciting and familiar.

More credibility than some other Australian retro-rockers
There are some old-school thumpers here in the shape of ‘Mary Go Round’ and ‘Part of Your Crowd’, and the band manage to borrow from the likes of Smashing Pumpkins whilst retaining more credibility than some other Australian retro-rockers like Jet or Wolfmother. Closing track, ‘Ignoring My Friends’ is the perfect slowed down outro, demonstrating that these guys can handle a piano line and a pair of drum brushes just as naturally as the heavier sounds.
This is a thoroughly enjoyable album that begs to be heard live. Luckily you can catch Pretty City on their European tour throughout November.
