Andy Clark’s brand new video single, ‘But for You’, lands in your ears this week. indieBerlin are one step ahead to give you the first listen.
Here at Berlin’s favourite indie review site, we’re know for being pretty darn good to our readers. Some would even say too good at times. Today, readers, is one of those days. Up-and-coming English songwriter, Andy Clark, releases his second single this week and has sent us the video link for a sneak peak.
Clark, hailing from Lancashire (don’t worry – most Brits aren’t really sure where that is either) in the UK, has been crafting his solo sound since the 90s. His 2019 incarnation is a combination of old school, ballad-esque songwriting and a solid folk sensibility. ‘But for You’ follows on from last year’s ‘Welcome to the Party’, the unashamededly joyous first taste of Clark’s forthcoming album I love Joyce Morris. (Joyce being an apple orchard, not a person, by the way. Must be a British thing.)

‘But for You’ is a more traditional country-style track, Clark’s sunny string-picking and slightly affected vocals have tinges of (another indieBerlin favourite) Kevin Morby. ‘At 28 I caught a break,’ Clark sings, with a rueful openness, ‘I’d taken all that I could take / I took my chance and my mistake was thinking that I’d made it.’
The video, created by Jake Perry-Gardner (presumably a coincidental apple reference), is a cutsey animated adventure, interposed with studio footage of Clark. Caution: watching it may induce severe warm and fuzzy feelings (spoiler – the apples get together at the end).
