Planning a German-Switzerland tour this Autumn, the four-piece indie band Quintessenz combine rock elements with experimental sounds from the handpan, a traditional instrument from the boys’ home in Switzerland. IndieBerlin got an exclusive interview with these up-and-comers.
indieberlin: In ten years you look back to today and think:
Allan: How could we walk around like this? We had some terrible hairstyles.
indieberlin: Tell us something about yourself that you always wanted to say but no one has ever asked you yet.
Andrin: Once a bra was thrown to us on stage. We later figured out it was a man who threw it and he had taken it from his girlfriend’s mother. We actually thought we had finally made it by this time.
indieberlin: If you had to describe your music to a deaf person, what would you say?
Andrin: Ever fallen through light blue velvet cloud?
indieberlin: If your music was a movie, which genre would it be in?
Yannick: Stop Motion Teen Drama
indieberlin: What was the last concert you went to?
Andrin: Me and Allan we went to a Yussef Dayes show in South London. It was a very intimate gig in a cellar of a house that almost felt abandoned. One of the best live performances of all time so far.

indieberlin: What was your biggest stage fuck-up?
Colin: Our drummer Allan once got fairly pissed before a concert and he threw up before it even started. It all got even worse when he realised he had a fog machine right behind his back. Instead of focusing on what we were playing he had great fun playing around with it and setting the whole venue into a room where one could hardly see anything.
indieberlin: What was the nicest compliment you once got?
Colin: Comparisons to amazing bands are probably the nicest compliments. When your music reminds people of artists like Radiohead, The Kooks, Supertramp and Jamiroquai you feel honoured and ambitious to achieve more at the same time.
indieberlin: How do you feel about covering a song?
Yannick: Covering a song can be a lot of fun. It is nice for the audience as well to hear something they know. When we cover a song we try to add new elements and put it in a style that matches our concept.
indieberlin: With whom would you never share the stage with?
