Interview with Father Midnight – f*cking up is part of the concept…

by | indieBerlin

Father Midnight were born next to an abandoned Späti in a dark slimy street in Berlin.
Rising from the underground mush the guys joined the temple of fuzz and dove into the local Berlin garage scene. After a busy year of performing (8mm Bar, Kantine am Berghain) and releasing two EPs, we ‘re proud to have snagged these guys for our upcoming Basement Bash Vol. XII (27th September @ Auster Club). If you like the Black Keys, Led Zeppelin and the Hives you’re not going to want to miss this. We sat down with Father Midnight to find out more…

indieberlin: How did you get together as a band?

FATHER MIDNIGHT: We actually met at a speed dating thing a few years ago. We started talking in-between the „interviews” and discovered our common love for music.

indieberlin: How does the songwriting process work for you / in your band?
Come to a show! You’ll get the idea!
FATHER MIDNIGHT: I (Philipp) usually come up with a riff or a chord progression and some lyrics, sometimes even a little demo, I recorded at home. I show it to the guys and then we play around with it and make it „ours”.

indieberlin: If you had to describe your music to a deaf person, what would you say?

FATHER MIDNIGHT: „Come to a show! You’ll get the idea!”

indieberlin: If your music was a movie, which genre would it be in?

FATHER MIDNIGHT: Can you remember the animations of „monty python’s flying circus”?

indieberlin: Where do you get your inspiration from?

FATHERMIDNIGHT: street walking. wandering through empty streets by night can be really inspiring and productive. i carry a notebook all the time.

indieberlin: What music do you listen to when you’re touring?

FATHER MIDNIGHT: being in cars stresses me out little bit. so i’d prefer something relaxing like „coney island” (lou reed) or „papermâché dream balloon” (king gizzard) but we are mostly „touring” berlin, using bike trailers.
Fucking up is part of the concept
indieberlin: What was the last concert you went to?

FATHER MIDNIGHT: „Tanning Bats”. They are one of my favorite bands in Berlin right now. We are playing a show together in October (27.10, Badehaus)

indieberlin: What was your biggest stage fuck-up?

FATHER MIDNIGHT: Haha. Fucking up is part of the concept. We improvise a lot on stage to leave more room for fuck-ups.

indieberlin: How do you feel about covering a song?

FATHER MIDNIGHT: No time for shit like that.

indieberlin: Do you prefer to play big festivals / stages or smaller club gigs?

FATHER MIDNIGHT: We really don’t care, as long as the vibe is cool…which is usually the case in smaller venues. But we’d like to play more private parties in the future again. So, if you have a birthday, a funeral or a bar mitzva coming up: give us a call!
