Interview with People Club ahead of their Basement Bash appearance

by | indieBerlin

Hailing from the same dreamy multiverse as Mac Demarco and Yellow Days, ruminative and daydreamy vocals coloured with sleazy rhythms, slacker rock guitar lines and hypnotic synths make up the distinctive sound of People Club.

Formed in Berlin in late 2017, the band were brought together over a love of intimate storytelling and lavish effects, and after sell-out performances in Berlin and London will be releasing their much-anticipated first official release before the end of the year. On the 25th of this month they’re live at Basement Bash Vol. XIII as support to Turquoise Suns and Molly. Wanna get free tickets? Write to win (at) indieberlin.de!

indieBerlin: How does the songwriting process work for you / in your band?

people club: It varies. Someone might bring in a real simple demo or loop idea and we just groove that and fool around with it till it sounds like us. Other times we’re just jamming to warm up and something magic happens and we build on that.

Our music? It’s like eating cherry ice cream and smoking menthol cigarettes with Nelson Mandela and Freddie Mercury. Whilst stargazing. On a beach in Zanzibar

indieBerlin: Tell us a secret about yourself.

people club: Sarah is (very) afraid of oranges.

indieBerlin: Where do you get your inspiration from?

people club: Loads of stuff. The problems that our generation face and finding a way in this world… We talk a lot and not just about music. That inspires the tunes. Also silly stuff like dog memes haha.

indieBerlin: What music do you listen to when you’re touring?

people club: Artists like Jungle, Frankie Cosmos, Frank Ocean, The Beatles, Men I Trust, Radiohead, Goat, SZA, Marvin Gaye, Puma Blue – all top shelf stuff.

Something to do with Drew’s carefully preened moustache

indieBerlin: What was the last concert you went to?

people club: Hush Moss. They were sick as usual.

indieBerlin: What was the nicest compliment you once got?

people club: Something to do with Drew’s carefully preened moustache.

indieBerlin: In ten years you look back to today and think:

people club: Life was so quaint before time travel.

indieBerlin: Do you dream in colour or black and white?

people club: In colour. Saturated VHS exercise video style.

indieBerlin: If you had to describe your music to a deaf person, what would you say?

people club: It’s like eating cherry ice cream and smoking menthol cigarettes with Nelson Mandela and Freddie Mercury. Whilst stargazing. On a beach in Zanzibar

indieBerlin: Do you want to greet somebody ;-))?

people club: Alan Titchmarsh
