LAL performing tonight to support charity event at ACUD

by | indieBerlin

As a duo from Toronto, they work to challenge oppression in all its forms. Their music evokes Bjork like vibes, aspiring to make room for new ideas and ways of being that are connected to the past, dancing with the future.

The breathtaking band LAL added to the list of performers supporting Gladt charity to raise money for the fight against racism, sexism, trans- and homophobia, ableism and other forms of discrimination.

Tonight at 19:30h doors of ACUD MACHT NEU will open to host a BIMM event: Nuance. Come up to Prenzlauberg and support the movement.

indieberlin: Tell us a little bit about your musical background

Nicholas: We both grew up listening to community radio (Rosina later went on to having her own R and B show ). Some of my earliest memories are being in after-hours clubs with my older brother listening to house music. I would later go on to making rap music . Which would then expose me to all styles of music . Going to the Detroit Electronic Music Festival and working with Public Transit recordings immersed me into electronic music.

indieberlin: How did you come up with the name _LAL_________?

Nicholas: We wanted to call the band Neil which means Blue in Bengali ..LAL which means red in Bengali sounded better

indieberlin: How did you get together as a band?

Nicholas: We worked together at a record store(HMV)in downtown Toronto in the Dance Department.

I was already making music as part of Da Grassroots a Hip hop production crew. Rosina would write small contracts on scrap paper saying that I would finish music for her by a certain date.

indieberlin: How does the songwriting process work for you / in your band?

Rosina: Nick usually comes up with a beat . Which most of the time is just a baseline and drums. I write something then we flush out the production then I record vocals. This whole process can be repeated 3 or 4 times .

indieberlin: If your music was a movie, which genre would it be in?

Rosina: Science Fiction/Fantasy/Speculative Fiction

indieberlin: Tell us a secret about yourself.

Nicholas: We have performed at Panorama bar in 2010 as Murr ft Rosina as part of a New Kanada night. I am also addicted to Blueberry Muffins and Butter tarts .

indieberlin: Where do you get your inspiration from?

Nicholas: I do not believe in inspiration. The repetition and completion of task on a schedule is a better way for me to work. More like Inspiration in the form of me cleaning my studio or making drum samples with a hand held recorder in a big empty room.

indieberlin: What music do you listen to when you’re touring?

Nicholas: This Tour we will be listening to our new record. We are moving into Stage 2 of production. We are looking forward to playing it for people and also letting it have life outside of the studio

indieberlin: What was the last concert you went to?

Rosina: Yamantaka //Sonic Titan at the Garrison. My good friend and collaborator Ange Loft is in the band

indieberlin: Do you prefer to play big festivals / stages or smaller club gigs?

Rosina: Small Outdoor Festivals at Night
