Moose Blood, sweat and tears: Live review of their gig at Musik & Frieden

by | indieBerlin

Moose Blood have been working hard these past months. Their new album I Don’t Think I Can Do This Anymore having been released in March, the British emo band has been touring incessantly to introduce the songs on stage. After many dates in the UK and US, they finally crossed over to Germany to perform at Musik & Frieden on June 4th.

UK based alternative band Acres were the ones to kick off the gig. The acoustics of the room gave the thriving drums and flourishing guitars unique additional smack, not to be heard on their on-tape releases. Frequently, the rock-y sound they’re known for producing turned into one reminiscent of renowned post-hardcore bands. Should Acres ever be in want of a change to a heavier sound, Musik & Frieden is the place to record at.

The elated crowd joined right in when Eddy Brewerton chanted the first lines

Akin to its name, the Schwarzes Zimmer was scarcely illuminated when Moose Blood emerged. They dove straight into Honey, a single off their second album. Typical of their lyrics, it deals with staying strong in a relationship, understanding each other’s faults. The swift, up-beat song was followed by faintly more mellow Talk In Your Sleep. To complete the waltz through the band’s history, the chords soon strummed to Bukowski, one of their earliest demos to be released. The elated crowd joined right in when Eddy Brewerton chanted the first lines of its text.

Throughout the set, the dark room brightened up quickly

Moose Blood followed a stringent schedule to perform all 17 songs they had set out to. Fans from all eras were pleased as they continued to play a mix of old favourites and new discoveries, including You Left in the Worst Way, Just Outside, and Sway. Throughout the set, the dark room brightened up quickly, the spotlights basking it in mostly blue and yellow light. Artificial fog obscured the band members during explosive moments. Due to the timely restrictions, interactions with the audience were limited, although Brewerton made sure to give thumbs-ups, smiling broadly when informing Have I Told You Enough was a song about his daughter, and wishing everyone a safe trip home.

Their next trips will carry them through mainland Europe for their upcoming concerts, before setting off to the UK in July, followed by Australia and the US around September.
