O-SHiN live @ Baketown Studios next Monday

by | indieBerlin

Baketown Studios will play hosts to Berlin-based Dutch singer O-SHiN next week. This is her second gig in die Hauptstadt and it’s set to be an evening of gorgeously unusual electro-pop.

Her debut single—”A Revelation”—is sublime, enchanting, and weird in equal measures. A jazzy bassline and understated vocals suddenly burst into an expansive and exotic soundscape for the choruses. Here O-SHiN’s quirky vocals come into their own. She sounds like a cross between Bjork and Lorde and holds your attention just as strongly.

“Walking Water” is grander, with a ballad-like quality from start to finish. There is everything you need in an alt-pop song: great off-beat rhythms, a great melody, beautiful synth work, and a voice that sounds like it’s from another realm.

So she and five musicians and producers relocated to a barn in the middle-of-nowhere instead. They transformed the barn into a DIY recording studio and went about creating genuinely gorgeous music.

As unconventional as these tracks sound, their conception was just as off-the-wall. Moving to Sweden in late 2015, O-SHiN worked with several musicians and producers in Stockholm. It seems like the bustle of the city wasn’t working though. So she and five musicians and producers relocated to a barn in the middle-of-nowhere instead. They transformed the barn into a DIY recording studio and went about creating genuinely gorgeous music.

She said that working on their own in the barn allowed them to look for and incorporate sounds that “would just not be possible in a normal studio.” Assorted chimes and odd instruments that they found in the barn make up the complex texture of the music, giving it a flavour all-its-own.

O-SHiN described the project as being “about taking risks, even if it seems crazy. It’s about believing the impossible can happen.” You can check out “A Revelation” and “Walking Water on Spotify. Here’s hoping there is much more to come from O-SHiN in the near future.
