Preview: PIXX at Urban Spree

PIXX brings her anarchic brand of electronic agit-pop to Urban Spree tomorrow night.

A graduate of the prestigious BRIT School (with alumni including Amy Winehouse and Adele) there is, in another world, a well-manicured pop star in Hannah Rodgers’ place. However, her path to PIXX was far less predictable and we should be grateful for it. On the back of wide-ranging sophomoric album ‘Small Mercies’ released this year, Rodgers is taking no prisoners. With the energy and chops to engage with issues such as gender hierarchies and the looming environmental catastrophe she’s a force to be reckoned with. And we have two tickets to give away to one lucky winner!

Departing from the more conventional folk leanings of 2015 debut E.P. ‘Fall In’, PIXX have charted a trajectory into a far darker and electro-infused place. Their diverse sound recalls artists from Aphex Twin to MGMT.  Furthermore, first full-length effort ‘The Age of Anxiety’ already announced their intention to grapple with bigger ideas. This album was a success and on following its release the band performed with other hotly tipped British indie outfits including HMLTD. Tour dates took them around Europe and included a raucous show at Kantine am Berghain last year.

‘Small Mercies’ is the most ambitious and well-formed of these ideas and influences thus far. Their dance sensibility is supplemented by grunge guitars, adding a punk thrust, whilst Rodgers’ lyrical wit strings together the eclectic but compelling collection of songs. Its at times dumb, at times profound but always fun. Tomorrow evening, Urban Spree should provide the perfect venue to bear witness to PIXX’s infectious energy. With a Berlin crowd likelihood is they’ll be preaching to the converted, but with a radical agenda as fun as this one then missing out would be the real sin.

PIXX will play Urban Spree on the 18th June. To win a pair of tickets, send an email to win(at)indieberlin.de.
