Last Friday at the small and edgy venue of Badehaus, people gathered to see the legend who had travelled all the way from Jamaica to give us the classic reggae vibes from the past: Sister Nancy had officially hit Berlin.
To start the night off there was a phenomenal DJ set, Legal Shot Sound System, that started the night off with reggae fusion and modern reggae that got the crowd starting to jive before the queen herself arrived on stage. With deep bass that resonated throughout the place, people gathered in front of the main stage.
‘cause I been Djing since I was 15 years old’
When Sister Nancy arrived, with help of a producer DJ, she brought the classics from the past back with new spins to greet her Berlin audience singing ‘Sister Nancy be back in Berlin’. Her most famous songs were sung for the fans, including Originality and Ain’t no stopping Nancy which got everyone singing along and grinding to the beat.
Sister Nancy has stayed in the reggae scene for years, starting her passion and drive in her teens ‘cause I been Djing since I was 15 years old’ in the 70s and gained notoriety in the 90s for her tune Bam Bam. Not only has her career been full, varied and given the people the life of reggae she is well known in supporting women in the reggae, and general music industry and is one of the female living legends within reggae.
Her personality shone through the crowd too, making jokes about how she really needed a joint which got everyone lighting up and trying to pass her one, clapping and laughing as she grooved on stage and improvised without stumbling at all.
Sister Nancy is still continuing the true reggae roots today and keeping a place for women in the industry, entertaining crowds and keeping the people happy.
