Tiny Ruins play tonight at Privatclub!

Following the February release of their third album, Olympic Girls, the New Zealander indie folk band lead by singer Hollie Fullbrook will play at Privatclub tonight, April 10th.

Olympic Girls received generally positive reviews from critics, as writers appreciated Fullbrook’s lyrical examinations on the foundations, limits and complexities of personal identity, freedom and human relationships. In “How Much”, Fullbrook ponders over a past partner and imagines, “How much would you be willing to give? / How much do you take from all of this? / How much before you’re strung out?”

In “Olympic Girls” she reflects on the mysterious forms of the self as they reappear transformed in art, sometimes more clear, sometimes more opaque: ”In the freedom of a microphone / There’s a shadow I can’t shake/ Who’s there?”.

“Holograms” is a brighter, summer song full of wonder about the future of the self after life. Albeit still a sobering meditation on death, it’s a sweet number to put on outside during a warm night by the water while looking up at the stars. Born in England, Fullbrook moved to New Zealand at age 10. She started Tiny Ruins as a solo project in 2009 and released her first full length Some Weren’t Meant for the Sea in 2011.

The second full length, Brightly Painted Ones (2014), saw the addition of band members Cass Basil on bass and Alex Freer on drums and won Best Alternative Album at the New Zealand Music Awards in 2014. Throughout the years, Fullbrook has collaborated with a diverse range of talented artists, including visionary director (and music producer) David Lynch, with whom she released the 7 inch Dream Wave in 2016.

Opening for Tiny Ruins on Wednesday night is Highest Seas, the name behind songwriter Leïla Zanzibar and her four piece band from Berlin. After their first EP Haunted Hearts came out on the local label Späti Palace, they’re excited for a second EP coming out soon.
