We Are the City interview – we talk to the Canadian band ahead of their 10th June Berlin concert

by | indieBerlin

We Are The City are three young Canadians with boundless energy. This is channelled into their music, touring and various creative projects. They work as directors, script writers and film producers, creating their own music videos and even their own film ‘Violent’. For some, this would be too much, but these three simply can’t stop. Now they’re out on tour and coming our way. indieberlin got the chance to chat with the trio.

indieberlin: Tell us something about yourself that you always wanted to say but no one has ever asked you yet.

We Are The City: I’m not sure such a question exists.
“We don’t enjoy trying to create a song by jamming together and to be honest I don’t think we would be very good at it.”
indieberlin: How does the songwriting process work in your band?
We Are The City: There isn’t one exact process that we have stuck to yet, for the most part what seems to happen is we spend a lot of time talking out ideas and concepts for songs instead of actually sitting around our instruments. We don’t enjoy trying to create a song by jamming together and to be honest I don’t think we would be very good at it.

indieberlin: What music do you listen to when you’re touring?

We Are The City: We don’t listen to much music on tour. Last tour we had a couple CD’s from bands we played with but other than that we spent our time in the van talking.

indieberlin: With whom would you never share the stage with?

We Are The City: Enya but it isn’t because we don’t like the music. Actually we all quite like the music, we just don’t think it would mesh together nicely.

indieberlin: What was the last concert you went to?

We Are The City: Glad you asked! Deerhoof and it was amazing.
“It was so bad that some people couldn’t believe it was real.”
indieberlin: What was your biggest stage fuck-up?

We Are The City: Last year we played a show in Munich where nothing worked, our gear wouldn’t stop breaking. It was so bad that some people couldn’t believe it was real.
“Once someone told me that I was their favourite son.”
indieberlin: What was the nicest compliment you once got?

We Are The City: Once someone told me that I was their favourite son.

indieberlin: What can we expect when we see you live on the 10th of June?

We Are The City: You can expect to hear some very loud tones and to see the 3 of us very happy to be playing our songs for you!

Thanks and see you on the 10th!
