PEOPLE is a community and network of musicians and creative souls. It all started at the Michelberger Hotel on Warschauer Straße in Berlin. The owners, Tom and Nadine, got to know lots of artists through their hotel and these friendships became the foundation of PEOPLE.
Together with Aaron & Bryce Dessner and Justin Vernon they gathered more than 80 artist friends for one week of music-making in 2016. During this week the Michelberger Hotel was turned into the home of these artists and closed down for other visitors. They rented Funkhaus Berlin for the artists to have a location where they could fully explore and experiment within the world of music – trying out new collaborations, ways of music-making, writing, and playing.
For two days they opened the doors for a paying audience to experience the results of these processes, and experience the musicians in a different environment – stripped from normal expectations and ideas of bands or brands. Equality was the key.
Independence
Of course it was a success. They didn’t have any sponsors or financial alliances – and still don’t today. Why? Because they want to grow naturally and stay independent without having to compromise creatively. PEOPLE is for the artists and by the artists. It’s a network for them to stay in touch and exchange ideas. This August the PEOPLE event is back and opening the doors for a two-day festival at Funkhaus – only this time the number of artists has jumped to no less than 160 confirmed participants.
