BrightDesire – Porn for Smart People. Thank God.

by | indiesex

Brightdesire.com is a porn site. But it’s a different kind of porn site.

If a digitised street containing your run of the mill porn sites might be a seedy alley down which you furtively huddle, hand nervously covering your wallet, being catcalled to leerily from dark doorways while on either side shop window displays show pneumatic coupling of silicone and steroid enhanced couples in all of the ways that you can imagine and some you can’t, with the man tossing an occasional sneering, grinning glance over his shoulder at you as you pass, then brightdesire is a modern and pleasant one-storey building set on a nice suburban road, tasteful semis to the left and right with leafy gardens and friendly people who look just like you and me waving cheerily while watering the fuchsias and who give you an understanding and approving smile of acknowledgement of the desires of which you once, for some reason, crazy idea, felt ashamed.

Firstly, to recap

Ethical porn. What is it? Well it’s ethical, of course, in all the ways you might think, and more or less involves the perception of the female partner in the sex scenes being treated as an equal partner and not being subjugated, obviously exploited or worse. Where the “female gaze” is given as much show time as the “male gaze”. Brightdesire.com is an ethical porn site, and it advertises itself as “porn for smart people”. So that’s a start.

“The aim is to move beyond the old cliches, boundaries and negativity of standard, old-style pornography and to offer something fresh, inclusive and intelligent.”

It’s a membership site, with a number of videos available for free that show you a few juicy bits to see if it’s something for you. Ms. Naughty, the lady who runs the thing, shoots most of the videos herself. She says:

“The aim is to move beyond the old cliches, boundaries and negativity of standard, old-style pornography and to offer something fresh, inclusive and intelligent.”

And she goes on:

“Bright Desire is a celebration of sex. It’s a deliberate attempt to show all the good stuff that we love about sex – intimacy, laughter, connection and real pleasure. It’s also about enhancing and exploring fantasy – because our brains are just as important to our sex lives as our genitals. I want to make “thinking porn” – erotic material that engages your mind as well as your heart and your libido. I also want to create “grateful porn”, sexy videos that inspire joy and happiness.”

“Our brains are just as important to our sex lives as our genitals”

The videos feature real life couples getting funky as well as solo outings, plus a collection of erotic photography and fiction, so theoretically there’s something for everyone.

So I checked it out. I found the site well made and the videos well shot, so there’s generally a pleasing level of professionalism here. As to the porn on offer, it’s true that it rids you of that icky feeling the more sensitive among us get when we have a gawp at conventional porn. As the label says, it’s consensual, it’s sensual, it’s sensitively and intelligently done, and the situations feel real and still push all the buttons.

It’s grown up and modern porn, for people who have sexual predilections but don’t want to feel sordid every time they want to give vent to their erotic ideas

I like the fact that someone is doing this, trying something different and taking porn in a different direction. It’s friendly porn. It’s porn-next-door. It’s grown up and modern porn, for people who have sexual predilections but don’t want to feel sordid every time they want to give vent to their erotic ideas, and it’s intelligent porn, for people who also don’t want their intelligence insulted every time they do the same.

One of the videos on the site, “Connections”, received a 2013 Feminist Porn Honourable Mention Award and another, “That’s What I Like”, won the Petra Joy Award in 2009.
