Dutch Iranian experimental rapper Sevdaliza in interview

by | indieBerlin, Music, music interview

Sevdaliza is originally from Iran but grew up in Rotterdam, playing basketball for the Dutch national team before deciding the sporting life wasn’t for her. She collaborates on her songs with producer Mucky and is set to test boundaries and push limits whereever she goes.

Here in interview, ladies and gentlemen, I give you Sevdalzia.

indieberlin: Tell us a little bit about your musical background

Sevdaliza : I performed in many ways for a long time. The current form is a fresh mind state.

indieberlin: How did you come up with the name?

Sevdaliza : It’s an aggregation of my first and last name

We keep it dynamic

indieberlin: How does the songwriting process work for you / in your band?

Sevdaliza : We work in so many different ways. Sometimes my producer lays the base with a production. Something we start with a progression of our key player. Or I find a freaky sound or sample and we build something around that. We keep it dynamic.

indieberlin: If you had to describe your music to a deaf person, what would you say?

Sevdaliza : As an intense emotion that reflects who I am as a person everyday. Raw, strong and vulnerable.

indieberlin: If your music was a movie, which genre would it be in?

Sevdaliza : An historical drama

I listen to everything from chansons to contemporary hiphop

indieberlin: Where do you get your inspiration from?

Sevdaliza : Emotions in every form.

indieberlin: What music do you listen to when you’re touring?

Sevdaliza : I listen to everything from chansons to contemporary hiphop. Recently I’m heavily inspired by classical music.

indieberlin: How do you think the audience in Berlin is different to the audience in say the UK?

Sevdaliza : The Berlin show was a great experience for me. So warm, so receptive, so open minded. I really can’t wait to play in Berlin again.

indieberlin: Do you prefer to play big festivals / stages or smaller club gigs?

Sevdaliza : My biggest challenge is to create an in intimate vibe at a big stage.

indieberlin: In ten years you look back to today and think:

Sevdaliza :
I am giving my all.

indieberlin: How did you come up with the name?

Sevdaliza: It’s an aggregation of my first and last name
