Florence and the Machine release new track ‘king’ out today

by | Music

Florence and the Machine today released their brand new single King. Accompanied by a video directed by Autumn de Wilde – responsible for the film Emma – Florence Welch has this to say about the new song:

As an artist, I never actually thought about my gender that much. I just got on with it. I was as good as the men and I just went out there and matched them every time. But now, thinking about being a woman in my thirties and the future, I suddenly feel this tearing of my identity and my desires. That to be a performer, but also to want a family might not be as simple for me as it is for my male counterparts. I had modeled myself almost exclusively on male performers, and for the first time I felt a wall come down between me and my idols as I have to make decisions they did not.

Florence Welch started making music with Isabella Summers as teenagers and called themselves Florence Robot and Isabella Machine. Hence the name.

The new indie band, christened Florence and the Machine, was touted by the British music press and won various awards, with their debut album in 2009 spending five weeks at number two, and growing a legion of diehard fans from that point.

King is the first release from Florence and the Machine since High as Hope in 2018, and we’re mightily happy they’re back!
