Victoria Mishchenko – ‘Human Nature’: Single Review

by | Music Reviews, New Music

It’s not that often that the worlds of indieBerlin and ‘The Voice of Germany’ collide.
Yet that kind of collision is exactly what we’ve got for you today. Victoria Mishchenko, probably most publicly recognised for a 2016 appearance on Germany’s answer to ‘The X Factor’, releases a new solo single this month.

Mishchenko released her first record in 2017, a four-track EP made up of unashamedly joyous pop numbers with more than a nod to the chart-topping female singer-songwriters of the ’90s. Since then, the Ukrainian-born, Berlin-based singer has popped up on various collaborations, including with QLAPs and Hydraponyka. The constant thread is Mishchenko’s soulful, inticing voice, giving an old-school, nostalgic feel to each track she sings on.
…her new recording of Michael Jackson’s 1982 ballad, ‘Human Nature’ is another perfect fit.
For this reason, Mishchenko tends to dip back into the archives of classic pop when selecting covers, and her new recording of Michael Jackson’s 1982 ballad, ‘Human Nature’ is another perfect fit. The song is given a modern update and a darker, more mournful feel, with heavier synths and more effects on the vocals, close to the style of London electro-pop singer Shura.

Despite this, Mishenko intends the song to be an invitation to dance. The video continuously shot beside the East Side Gallery in Friedrichshain, features a captivating routine by dancers, Sally Cowdin and John Förster.

‘Human Nature’ is available now on Spotify and all the usual channels.
