While the last release from the xx was back in 2017, the band members haven’t been doing nothing. While Jamie XX released his own solo single not long ago, now Jamie has produced bandmate Oliver Sim’s first ever single released under his own name…

weird, growly electro pop

Romance with a Memory is a weird, growly electro pop number and the accompanying video is the first music video I’ve seen in a while that I just had to keep watching. With a home video vibe, it features various over-the-top ghouls and monsters dancing around backyards, crawling on all fours along packed subway trains (and the looks of the fellow passengers makes you really think that they have no idea what’s happening…priceless) – as well as a guy in a boiler suit and a zombie mask, holding a big kitchen knife, while bopping and popping around the kitchen of a suburban home…

XX the band was born in 2009 in South London: the London label Young (formerly Young Turks) signed them after hearing demos they’d posted on MySpace (yes, MySpace!). The debut album, also called xx, got to number 3 in the uk album charts and the band were included in best band / top 50 lists from Rolling Stone to NME to the Guardian newspaper.

Since 2017 the individual members have been experimenting with alternative avenues for their music. Oliver Sim’s new single Romance with a Memory continues the wonderfully odd story…
