EP Review: Bird Dreams – soulful indie pop that rewards a replay

by | Music, Music Reviews, New Music

An accomplished slice of soulful indie pop that rewards more than a few replays.

On first listen โ€œGolden Streetโ€ took me back to the 90โ€™s when I was listening to Fiona Apple and Luscious Jackson, itโ€™s indie pop alright but good indie pop. Itโ€™s polished, tight and these guys and girl have their sound but then with โ€œMetro Dreamโ€ it took another direction into the  Zero 7โ€™s Simple Things domain, so I could use the word homage, lightly, although they probably didnโ€™t intend it, i certainly mean it as a compliment.

A mix of a number of musical elements, such as Troplicalia-influenced vocals, especially on โ€œMovin Onโ€ (where Laura starts singing in  Brazillian Portuguese), bluesy guitars, proggy too with the guitar solo on โ€œKeep On Fallingโ€, ringing keyboards, and classical string arrangements, into a relaxing, potent wave of sounds. BirdDreams cosmic instrumental journeys are marketable as hipster easy listening.

Its diverse genre combinations mesh really well together like itโ€™s trying to tell a story, beginning, middle and end

The production on this seems minimal, and not enhanced in any way, just the necessary amount of production which leads me to believe that BirdDream will sound just as good live. Itโ€™s diverse genre combinations mesh really well together like itโ€™s trying to tell a story, beginning, middle and end. If this band make it, I see the potential for it to be able to reinvent itself over and over as wisdom and talent expands with experience.

Golden Street took me back to the 90โ€™s when I was listening to Fiona Apple and Luscious Jackson

The band name BirdDream sounds amateur compared to the sophisticated sound that itโ€™s presenting, it could use a bit more imagination or separate itโ€™s self from itself, the double Dโ€™s feel like a badly fitted bra and it just confuses my eyeโ€™s but thatโ€™s just the spelling nazi in me.

It’s diverse and overall itโ€™s grown up music for the kids to dig. A mixture of humility and pride, and also thoughtfulness in words. Iโ€™ll be adding Golden Street, Metro Dream & Movinโ€™ On to my Spotify playlist.
