An accomplished slice of soulful indie pop that rewards more than a few replays.
On first listen โGolden Streetโ took me back to the 90โs when I was listening to Fiona Apple and Luscious Jackson, itโs indie pop alright but good indie pop. Itโs polished, tight and these guys and girl have their sound but then with โMetro Dreamโ it took another direction into the Zero 7โs Simple Things domain, so I could use the word homage, lightly, although they probably didnโt intend it, i certainly mean it as a compliment.
A mix of a number of musical elements, such as Troplicalia-influenced vocals, especially on โMovin Onโ (where Laura starts singing in Brazillian Portuguese), bluesy guitars, proggy too with the guitar solo on โKeep On Fallingโ, ringing keyboards, and classical string arrangements, into a relaxing, potent wave of sounds. BirdDreams cosmic instrumental journeys are marketable as hipster easy listening.
The production on this seems minimal, and not enhanced in any way, just the necessary amount of production which leads me to believe that BirdDream will sound just as good live. Itโs diverse genre combinations mesh really well together like itโs trying to tell a story, beginning, middle and end. If this band make it, I see the potential for it to be able to reinvent itself over and over as wisdom and talent expands with experience.
The band name BirdDream sounds amateur compared to the sophisticated sound that itโs presenting, it could use a bit more imagination or separate itโs self from itself, the double Dโs feel like a badly fitted bra and it just confuses my eyeโs but thatโs just the spelling nazi in me.
It’s diverse and overall itโs grown up music for the kids to dig. A mixture of humility and pride, and also thoughtfulness in words. Iโll be adding Golden Street, Metro Dream & Movinโ On to my Spotify playlist.
