indieberlin: How did you come up with the name Soda Can?

Nico: No idea, Mark came up with it
Mark: I was thinking about what bands used to call themselves before their actual name, and I read somewhere that The White Stripes tried using Soda Powder. It didn’t sound good so from Soda Powder I got to Soda Can thinking it sounded better and already has an image attached to it.

 

indieberlin: How does the songwriting process work for you / in your band?

Nico: Mark and I work in a Lennon/McCartney kind of way. Someone brings an idea or a song and other one adds a guitar part or sings a melody.
Mark: Sometimes one brings a finished song and the other one says it’s good enough so we just roll with it. But I think the best ones come from working together

 

indieberlin: If you had to describe your music to a deaf person, what would you say?

indieberlin: If your music was a movie, which genre would it be in?

Nico: Oooh, that’s a tough one… Maybe in a Tarantino movie?
Mark: Definitely Romantic Comedy, I’m a comedic mess.

 

indieberlin: Tell us a secret about yourself.

Mark: We drink more beer cans than soda cans.

 

indieberlin: What was the last concert you went to?

Thomas: Zomboy, the dubstep DJ. What a show.
Nico: Sigur Ros in my case
Mark: IDLES. One of the best shows i’ve been to in the last couple of years. Intensity, leather, sweat and wholesome messages.

 

indieberlin: What was your biggest stage fuck-up?

Nico: I think it was our second gig where everything went the wrong way.
Mark: Oh yeah, that one. I broke like 2 strings during the first song, one more in the next one and no one had a spare guitar willing to tune it in D. The bass drum was constantly moving and… what else?
Nico: I think a pedal of mine broke. Luckily there were 10 people and all of them our friends so it didn’t feel that bad

 

indieberlin: What was the nicest compliment you once got?

After a show, a girl came up to us and said “You make me feel what Nirvana makes me feel”. That was it.

 

Mark: I remember one of our latest shows, a singer from one of the other bands on the bill said to me “You guys are all raw energy, keep doing what you’re doing because its you and it’s authentic”. That felt like a drug.

 

indieberlin: How do you feel about covering a song?

Mark: Love it. I mean, people used to live by covers in the 40s and 50s basically. We covered The Stooges and Neil Young in our albums. It’s our way to saying thanks for changing our lives.

 

indieberlin: With whom would you never share the stage with?

Nico: Sting
Mark: Really?
Nico: Nah I don’t know. Just kidding.

 

indieberlin: In ten years you look back to today and think:

What a time to be alive.

 

indieberlin: Do you dream in colour or black and white?

Nico: Colour, always.
Mark: I once had a black and white dream
Nico: Was it good?
Mark: I dunno, it’s an old dream
