Jordan Rakei – Live Preview

by | indieBerlin

Jordan Rakei plays Columbia Theater, Berlin on Sunday 29th September 2019.
This week, the smooth-voiced 27-year-old embarked on a European tour in promotion of Origin, his third album to date. Rakei released the record in June this year on the Ninja Tune label. To date, it’s propelled the New Zealand-born songwriter further into the public imagination than ever before.

Rakei made enough of a stir with his early recordings back in 2013 to be tempted into a move from the Southern Hemisphere to the north. Since arriving in London, his sound has developed and benefitted from regular crossovers with Tom Misch, Alfa Mist and Barney Artist. As part of the Are We Live collective, the group are now regular collaborators.
Having provided music to artists including Disclosure and Loyle Carner, Rakei is firmly embedded in the London scene.
Having also provided lyrics, music and vocals to artists including Disclosure and Loyle Carner, Rakei is now firmly embedded in the London scene. Origin, though, is largely a testament to individual talent.

In tracks like ‘Say Something’, the album capitalises on the natural soulfulness of Rakei’s voice. True to form, this is laid over a typically jazzy beat and a solid funk bassline. ‘Mind’s Eye’, the record’s highlight, shows his songwriting skill at its best, with its intricate, calming lo-fi sound. Picture waves on a beach at sunset. Yeah, it sounds like that.

Jordan Rakei’s autumn tour is selling out fast. Catch the remaining tickets here.
