RYL at the last Basement Bash of the year

by | indieBerlin

Punk garage band RYL step up from garage to basement – Basement Bash to be precise. Hey, it’s progress!

The opener for OUR GIRL at the Next coolest show in town Opening for UK next-big-thing Our Girl, we’re definitely looking forward to have RYL open up the show with their characteristic full-bore garage rock n roll! Meanwhile we got the young men from the garage to sit down for a chat…

indieberlin: Tell us a little bit about your musical background

Ryl: So I, Jannis, have been listening mostly to Pop Rock when I was younger. Foo Fighters and Beatsteaks kinda stuff. I’m from the Bavarian countryside so that was about the most „underground“ stuff I could get my hands on. Then, when we started playing together here in Berlin we had a second guitarist. He sadly isn’t with us anymore. He’s in Denmark. He introduced us to the whole garage stuff, Ty Segall, Bass Drum of Death, etc. Apparently the Danish countryside is way cooler. We were a lot into FIDLAR, so that’s where we started off…

indieberlin: If you had to describe your music to a deaf person, what would you say?

Ryl: Dunno if talking is the best communication channel here. I’d just put on a big smile and shake my head very fast.

indieberlin: If your music was a movie, which genre would it be in?

Ryl: I guess an episode of a weird kids series. I’d love to see Ian Curtis (Frying Burgers) play in the Krusty Krab.

indieberlin: Tell us a secret about yourself.

Ryl: Hannes can get you a toe. You want a toe? Believe me, there are ways. You don’t wanna know about it. 3 o’clock, this afternoon. With nail polish.

The promoter of a gig coming on stage, encouraging the crowd to shout “Ryl is my new favourite band”, singing a song with us and afterwards, in between kissing each one of us, telling us how this is the best thing that ever happened to him.

indieberlin: What music do you listen to when you’re touring?

Ryl: Barry White – Standing in the shadows of love. On repeat. Only.

indieberlin: What was the last concert you went to?

Ryl: We opened for Dysnea Boys. Bunch’a hippies still figuring out the difference between a guitar and a chain saw. JK, lovely guys, good music, love em!

indieberlin: What was your biggest stage fuck-up?

Ryl: We didn’t really fuck up badly. I guess beer in the socket and following power blackout was the worst from our side. We had a guy from the audience coming/falling on stage and waving the monitor box over his head though. The sound wasn’t great that night and after that even worse.

indieberlin: What was the nicest compliment you once got?

Ryl: The promoter of a gig coming on stage, encouraging the crowd to shout “Ryl is my new favourite band”, singing a song with us and afterwards, in between kissing each one of us, telling us how this is the best thing that ever happened to him. He was of course totally sober.

indieberlin: Do you dream in colour or black and white?

Ryl: Black and White for the emotional things. Colour 16:9 Full HD Dolby surround for the crazy CGI stuff.
